When I co-owned a dirt track sprint car, a track had been regraded. A rock about the size of an orange surfaced and went unnoticed. During a race, a spinning rear wheel of a car in front of ours threw the rock. It hit our driver in the forehead, broke his helmet, and knocked him out. Fortunately, when he went out, his foot relaxed on the throttle and the car coasted to a stop on its own.
One of the officials saw what happened and red-flagged the race. The medical crew worked on our driver and got him to come to without trying to remove him from the car.
When he got his senses back about him, the first thing the did was to start complaining about busting a $300 helmet. (This was 20 years ago.) Someone then asked him what his head would look like had he not been wearing that $300 helmet. Put a different perspective on it.
