altenator on a moline

I installed a 12v chevy altenator on a 50 moline tractor
(other 12v items had already been installed ie:battery starter etc.) hooked the bat termanal to + side of bat. ,field(F) to ignition circuit
left the other terminal unhooked.
it seams to charg too mutch the 20 amp gage is pegged and stays there till you idle the motor down

is this normal?
do i need to do anything else?
