If it's got an injection pump with lines leading to each injector nozzle that may be the noise you hear.
I don't know if you ever heard an injection pump being tested on a test bench but it sounds just like a diesel sitting there running at an idle. There is a lot of pressure in those lines and it makes a noise when the nozzles pop open.
