Bought my '42 Farmall H for $400 and currently have $4000 or so in it and it still needs body work and paint. I didn't have to touch the transmission or rearend - that's mainly just engine work, tires, etc. This is with NO labor charge for my work.
I was working on a Farmall A for a neighbor - he came and got it when we hit $3000 (includes my labor at only $10 per hour) and that was just to get it running, oil seals, clutch, body work. Still needs a few little pieces and paint.
