Last time I had a block bored, 4 different shops wanted me to have the block hot tanked BEFORE I brought it in. I finally found a one man shop that does fantastic work and cleans parts after the machine work is done.
Prior to that, I gave up in disgust at a NAPA machine shop. Two different 5.7 SBC engines, both running, but tired, when I tore them down. On one, the crank came back with the bolt for the harmonic balancer broke off in it, and on the second the block needed to be align bored because the crank locked up when I torqued the #3 main bearing. The shop was obviously keeping all the choice stuff for themselves and their buddies and dumping junk back to customers off the street.
I told the manager, IF I ever bring any parts in again, I'll make a punch mark where you can't find it so I'll know if I get my own parts back. He was obviously disturbed at the thought, but I never had occasion to take anything back there.
