I shoot for 1 1/2 inches. Some are shallower, some deeper. They all come up. I've never had a problem, in nine years of growing soybeans, with them crusting over so much that they don't push through and when I no till with my Great Plains drill some of them are plainly visible in the slot and they still grow just fine. I never have too little moisture at planting time though. Usually it's the other way around although this year was perfect.
