I blew the reed valves out of a York compressor by foolishly slugging it with liquid refrigerant. Since that expensive lesson, I place the cans upright in a 5 qt plastic bucket of warm water.
The refrigerant boils off quickly in the warm water and no danger of tearing up the compressor by feeding it liquid.
