I have been looking at new cars for a month or so after my last one was totaled out. I have been looking at the Impala or Honda Accord primarily but have also considered the G6 and Malibu as well as the Ford Fusion. My niece just got a G6 with the 4cyl with 10,000 miles on it and she loves it. She lives in So. California with lots of hills on the freeway and she is happy with the performance. The QC manager at our plant was on vacation recently and she rented a Malibu and she said she hated it. These are individual opinions, not mine.
I can tell you that if you check Craig"s List you will find lots of 2~3 year old G6"s for sale. Nowhere near as many Malibu"s. This may be attributable to the G6 outselling the Malibu due to price and targeted market of the younger set.
If you are buying new you are in a good spot. Wait a week or so after GM files for bankruptcy and see what the dealers will be willing to do. In the interim, see if you can get a loaner for a day or so and possibly consider renting for a few days.
I live in West Michigan and can tell you that the dealers here are looking for used prices that are above the Kelly Blue Book. Detroit area dealers are priced far more agressively. By the way, the Ford Fusion has the highest customer satisfaction ratings of anything in its class and is worth a look.

At one time I had seven restored examples which were shown and used in ploughing matches.
