You don't have to dig very deep to hit a gas main and in some places could certainly do it with an auger digging post holes. A couple of years ago some fellas digging in preparation to put up a new barn a couple of miles from me at Tharp Lake Rd and US12 hit a main, 22" maybe, right in the middle of a tilled field and when it went off could've fit a barn in that crater. One fella was killed. Shook the houses for miles and miles and miles and they did build the barn over it eventually.
Locating to dig first is always a good idea, and the law in many places, but not the end all because underground utilities still get hit all of the time even after being located.
