Sometimes it has to be done so they can get one more cuttign out of it later on. If the alfalfa is only 6" tall but it's budded out, it isn't gonna grow anymore. Only option then is to cut it, and if you can see the windrow, take it off. We've done it ourselves with 2nd crop, and the next cutting was fantastic because of it.
