Personally, I don't think there's a lot of evidence that it works well for either, but that's besides the point. And I would note that there are a number of legal pain relievers that are highly addictive, notably Vicodin and Oxycontin. I equate Oxycontin with heroin: they're both equally addictive, and addicts of one drug will substitute the other if they can't get their drug of choice.

These people have seen the impact of raising the drinking age, and it's not pretty. Students haven't stopped drinking, they just move their drinking off-campus and into private parties where they kill themselves from alcohol poisoning and drunk driving. I'll always say this: If you're old enough to fight and die for your country, you're old enough to drink a beer.
