I don't know anything about the petroleum industry of the petro markets, but I wonder if the problem isn't so much OPEC manipulating the markets as it is that our Federal government won't allow full exploitation of the oil, natural gas, and coal that we have available here in the US.
It seemed to me that the price of gas went down significantly last summer when the US announced that we were going to drill off-shore and in ANWR. Then, after the election, the US decided that wasn't a good idea and that we are not going to exploit those resources. So now, the foreign oil producers can set their prices again wherever they want them.
Who knows? The news media gives a different reason every time the price changes.
