A twister was formed Wednesday evening about 7:30 as a cold front went through Xenia, Oh. The Greene County Fairgrounds was in the path of the tornado. Xenia is a city that has been plagued with 4 devastating tornados in the last 70 years. The one in '74 was still in an occassional conversation. I have friends who were setting up their camper for the weekend there that sustained some damage, and a tree fell over and crushed the hood of their car, but many other campers were turned over or destroyed. Today's Dayton Daily News showed several pages of aerial photographs including the fairgrounds. It looked like a war zone. Many of the buildings on the fairgrounds were destroyed. Needless to say, the Old Timers Days has been cancelled. There's nothing left to use for the display areas. There was one person killed at the fairgrounds when another tree blew over and crushed the occupant in a car. Again, we're reminded that we are at the mercy of the forces of nature. Tornados in Ohio, Earthquakes in California, and drought caused fires in the west. Hmmm. Is there a message in this - is someone upstairs trying to get our attention? Ken McWilliams Dayton, OH
