My step son, who is somewhat of a computer geek, says that the AVG for $30? per year is more than good enough. I used the AVG free edition for a couple of years, and you can still get the free edition, but it seems to malfunction at times and really doesn't provide the protection that is needed today.
I just got a brand new Dell desktop, it came with a trial version of McAfee, when it expires, I will download the AVG. I've been told the McAfee is somewhat of a resource hog also, although I have not noticed it yet.
