Clive, I've found on most of the older JDs, that when they lock up like that, its a rusted out C clip on the bottom of the shifter leaver. Remove the transmission top, place the gears back in neutral, then examin the shift leaver under the shifter plate. If the C clip is rusted away it will let the half round ball and spring slide down and causes this problem. If that is what is your problem, its easy to fix. hope this helps. AZ
