The experience I have had with the A model John Deeres that are stuck in gear is that most of the time thet are stuck in two gears. The only way that I have found to fix this problem is to remove the top transmission cover and put all the gears back in neutral and then reinstall the gear shift lever and cover with the lever in neutral.
