calcium chloride damage to rim--mandatory repair?

I just bought a Farmall 300 that has a new paint job. Everything is perfect, except an area around the stem on the right rear rim. The area is about twice the size of my hand. It is very rough, and is obviously old damage from when the wheels had solution in them years ago. Are the rims compromised, or can I just let this go. If they are affected, can I simply cut out the spot and patch it, or must I replace the rim? Thanks.
