The origin of the s-word is Anglo-Saxon, as are most of the four-letter vulgarities in the English language. After the Norman conquest in 1066, many Saxon words became vulgar just because they weren't French. So for various bodily functions, you'll find that those with Latin roots are considered to be acceptable, but the equivalent words with Anglo-Saxon origins are vulgar.
