Generator or alternator? I have had alternators with leaky diodes, defective voltage regulators. Usually will discharge battery within a day or so. Alternator might become warm to the touch if discharging thru field coil. Had one where regulator would sense voltage drop on battery when door was opened and dome lite came on. Would then turn current on to field, even when the engine was off. Wife would typically get out of car, go around to passenger side, and grap purse, lunch bag, close doors and go in to work. By quitting time, battery was dead. If she grabbed her stuff and exited thru driver's door, wouldn't trigger VR. Don't think that was easy to diagnose. Went back to rebuild shop 3 times, got new VRs, and all were defective. Finally doug old VR out of the scrap box. No more trouble.
