UPS could tear the crap out of an anvil with a rubber mallet!! They have broken tractor camshafts and other tractor parts, that have been packed very well. Had a cam come in sch. 40 PVC.....UPS BROKE THE PVC PIPE! The UPS guy that came to handle the claim looked at it and said "The only way that could happen is someone dropped it" Well, no $hit shirlock!!
Had UPS damage another item, that was packed tightly in a box, steel banding and corner reinforcements on the box to hold the thing together....they still damage it. Took over 3 months to get them to pay off the insurace claim. It was exactly like you said, jump thru hoops until you say screw it. Became enough of a pain in their rear they finally paid it, but wanted to keep the broken item....which was BS, but anyway.......
Go overkill on the packaging, and insure for $1000 or more and it MIGHT get there in one piece.
