Greatness has to be judged on era. Iowa you are certianly right that the JD new generation changed everything and that the improvements on the 20 series made 3020/4020's productive tractors for 40 years. Same can be said for IH 806, 706 series.
However that does not take anything away from earlier tractors. If you look at IH H and M. Those tractors were introduced in '39 and there were still plenty of them earning their keep on working farms 40 years later.
