I remembered your post and got a quick look at a Rumely oil pull at the big threshing show at Rollag Minn. Yes they used oil as coolant. From the book"AMERICAN GASOLINE ENGINES" says the oil pull used oil in it's radiator and the higher cylinder temp was part of the reason for their ability to run cheaply on kerosene. They did not use a radiator fan, they have a smokestack like cover on the radiator and have the exhaust blowing out the top of the stack to create a draft to pull cooling air through the radiator.
