A quick perusal of Joe Newman's web site reveals him to be an entertaining crackpot. Checking out what other people have to say about indicates that he's probably also a crook.

Here's a random selection from Deacon Joe's web site:

"I show you now a simple MECHANICAL explanation of HP per second of TRUTH: Take a shaft and attach it to the center of 1 ft radius [2 ft. diameter] pulley. Now imagine that you rotate the shaft of one full rotation of 360 degrees in one SECOND. Then "you" have lifted 550 lbs 6.283 ft in one second! ["1 ft. radius gives 6.283 ft in circumference"] That is, 6.283 HP per second! Per rotation of shaft! Multiply by [60 rpm] 60 SECONDS that is 376.98 HP per MINUTE!"

So Joe Newman has just redefined what power is. Joe's crackpot theory won't pass the most basic test known to every freshman engineering or science major: Dimensional consistency. Power is measured in units of foot-lbs per second, newton-meters per second, etc. It's always force times distance divided by time. It's the rate at which work is done. Now, I have to gloss over Joe's math, which is nonsensical, but in the end he is saying power equals power divided by time.

Let's write that out:

power = power / time
-or-
force x distance / time = (force x distance / time) / time

I'm sure if you passed high school algebra you can see there's a problem with that equation. It only has a solution when time equals "1". And even then it fails dimensional consistency.

Now you CAN make the case that Joe is a genius who has re-invented math and physics. But the problem is that he casually drops the names of great scientists and engineers like Maxwell, Faraday, Tesla and Einstein. You can't do that! If you invent your own set of scientific theories that contradict every existing principal, you don't get to go back and quote the same theories that you've already rejected. It would be as if a Wiccan started quoting the Nicene Creed: you can't pick and choose between your belief systems.

Oh, by the way: How much money have you invested in Joe Newman's crackpot theories? Not too much, I hope.
