I frequently rent items that I need but dont have. Dollar per dollar its cheaper to rent more expensive things than cheaper items. For example, I can rent a 40 ton tracked excavotor for 2200 a week, but a grapple bucket for a bobcat that I can buy for 1800 is 365 a week. I rent from a couple of local places and from Hertz Equipment (same as the car rental company, just a different division). What I have found is if you dont get at least a week, just hire the job done, its no cheaper. Try holiday weekends (I love the week of Christmas, you get Xmas day, NY Day, and at least one Sunday free, and may even get a break on the weekly price) even Hertz will negotiate off season prices. Oh, and buy the insurance, always always buy the insurance and damage waivers.
