I have never seen a D-501, only a few photos in Mopar magazines, but I bet they really ran hard, since the Chrysler 300B that the engine originally came in was probably nearly 1000 pounds heavier than the Dodge. Was your D-501 a stick shift? I don't think I have ever seen an old Hemi car with anything but an automatic or fluid drive transmission.
I had a 57 D-500 that was no slouch, even with the Torqueflite. When I wrecked out the car, I kept the engine and transmission and eventually sold it to a friend. He has it in a restored 57 convertible after he completely rebuilt it. He also used the Torqueflite--which blows my mind, since he did nothing to the transmission except change the fluid and adjust it. I was kind of hard on that transmission, way back when...it must have been a good one.
