From what I understand they give 4 more speeds between the 4th and 5th gears so that raking hay when you can idle along and have enough power you could still have enough speed so you did not have to race the engine and in that speed range high normal 5th was too fast to pull loaded wagons but a speed faster than a normal 4th gear would have you could put in 4th high range and go down the road at a decient speed. Never ment to be used with the pto like a sherman in a Ford was never ment to be used with pto. The John Deere 6 speed transmission was slightly slower than the 5th speed in a Farmall and 4th was the same in both so there was a gap in Farmal gearing that equaled the 5 & 6 speeds in a Deere so those were designed to take up that gap and in the Deere 5th was correct for a hay rake. In other words normal 4th too slow for certain jobs and 5th too fast so you could put in the new 5th, 6, th, 7th, 8th and get a speed you had the poer to work at but enough or not too much speed. They did not speed up the normal 5th gear, only the normal 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th gears.
