You can always spot the folks at a show or a festival that are new to bluegrass. They've grown up with other music where it's terribly embarrasing to burst into applause only to find that they're not done, it was only a three-beat rest in the musical score. Bluegrass, it's just fine to applaud or give a whoop for a nice break or a really slick instrumental or vocal lick.
I've played in front of audiences of the "polite" type, and wondered sometimes of they were awake. In fairness, they weren't rude or unappreciative, they just didn't know that it was okay to clap.
