There is a plug you can put in where the two smaller wire plug into the alt and this will convert the alternator to a one wire alternator. I would suggest doing that.
The problem you are having is caused by feed back from the alternator. It is feeding your ignition system. An idiot light in that circuit should create enough resistance to lower the voltage so the engine will shut off. Another device you can use is a diode of the correct size as was mentioned in the other post.
But if it were me I would look into making it just a one wire alternator. You can save yourself a lot of time and cursing.
