Modern cables with modern insulation far outperform the cable to which you refer. Since it is used as a "ground" connection, insulation was unimportant and bare cable is less costly. It does corrode more easily. If you bend it and get a powder (not dirt) coming out, it is near the end of its useful life. Unless you want to stay "pure", when you replace it use a new insulated cable of the proper size. What is the proper size you ask? The same size as the other cable.
