It doesn't matter who "thought" of it first, so skip the letter to a friend. That's why you get a patent, to have a legally enforceable "right" in whatever it is you invented. You must get it "patented" first. Also the reason you don't want to publicize (by telling friends, etc.) isn't because you then could not patent it. It's because someone else may beat you to the patent office.
