I read a good power steering rebuild story in one of my car magazines. They said the difference between ATF and power steering fluid is that Transmission fluid must be slippery enough to protect bearings and gears, but not so slippery that the transmission clutches and bands cannot get a good grip. Power steering fluid does not need to operate under the same restrictions so the additive package is set up for best film strength and extreme pressure protection. They say power steering fluid will give more pressure, less heat and less pump wear. I have converted my older power steering units from ATF to power steering fluid and there is a noticable difference especially if the pump is a bit worn and noisy. To get rid of the old fluid remove the return hose, turn steering full lock to lock with engine running untill old fluid is gone, refill with new fluid and pump it empty again to flush system. reconnect the hose and fill with steering fluid.
