There are two different types of 12v. coils used with points type ignitions. One is intended to be used with an external resistor, which might be mounted near the coil or might be a wire buried in a wiring harness, the other is intended for use without an external resistor. If you use the former type in place of the latter, you will go broke buying points; they will burn up in a matter of minutes.
