Dan, I've been around tractors for many, many years and as with anything there will be junk in any brand and the different brands will have a group of loyalists that wouldn't have any other brand on their farm. John Deere is probably the one brand that a lot of people would rather own. I do jest about the "Green" tractors but I do know they have to be a pretty good tractor or they wouldn't be so popular. I've have only owned 2 tractors, but have driven (worked with) several brands. Each had it's use and some several uses. There are other small tractors that probably beat the "N" hands down, but can you afford the price? That is why the price of the "N" is considered high. Unless you have MONEY and can afford to spend 10's of thousands dollars the "N" is the tractor to consider. The only other tractor I would suggest you look at would be a "234" IH (I think that's the correct #). I've never owned or been around one, (and because IH has made good tractors) but this little tractor has diesel models and 3 pt hitch. Check this one out as I don't know a lot about them. Haven't seen many for sell. Just another type I know about that should suit a small farmer and has been around just long enough to find a good one at a decent price. Please get other opinions on this tractor as far as reliability and parts as I don't really know.
You've gotten a lot of good advice from some of the guys, just pick several types of tractors that suits you and weigh the pros and cons of each. Then choose one. If you don't like sell it and get another. Don't agonize over it. You'll find what you like.
