The check engine light could be on because the mileage setting has come up on the computer and nothing is wrong at all. If you know someone with a scanning probe it can be checked in about 5 minutes but a shop gets around $100 to do it. The alternative is to take the ground cable off the battery and leave the car set for at least an hour. The computer will reset itself and the light will go off. If you have a problem the light will come back on shortly and you can get it checked.
