Unfortunately, the scammers have picked up on the fact that you can sometimes shame a seller into taking a check by saying "I've written checks in 40 states, never had one refused, yada, yada"- Some who say that are like you (proud of the fact that they have never bounced one, either), but some are scammers, and it can be tough to tell the difference. I, too, mourn the passing of the "my word is my bond" era.
One important factor is, how hard is it going to be to collect the check if it bounces? If you're from the next county, I'd be more willing to take a chance than if you were from 4 states away, because you've gotta sue the miscreant where he lives.
