Are you sure this is simply a plug with a hole, or is it some sort of check valve that has gone bad? Some styles of carburators can leak fuel into the engine after shutdown, resulting in oil contamination at best, or at worst, broken parts from hydrostatic (petrolstatic?) lock when you try to start the engine. A check valve in the manifold (lets fuel go out, doesn't let air in) is one way to keep this from happening.
