Jim,

It all depends on the crack. A freeze crack on the exterior of the block or head can usually be fixed by welding. It takes an experienced welder with the right rod. A crack in a machined surface is usually the kiss of death. Disassemble your block and head and take them to a machine shop for magnafluxing. This will tell you where the cracks that you can not see are. If the parts are salvageable, they should be able to do the welding or will know someone who can.
