Need engine help on a MC40 crawler

I have what I believe is a 1954, John Deere 40 crawler. I just got it and have some problems with it. It runs fine but after it runs for a while is starts back firing, what would cause it to do this? A friend told me that it sounds like a burnt valve if so do you know where I can get the parts to rebuild the head? It seems also that it doesn't push as well as it should the engine will not bog down but when trying to push a tree or dirt it will just stop and the engine is still running full throttle, what would be the cause of this? I would appreciate any help that you know. Thanks alot.
