If you started the tractor after connecting the battery backwards you most likley welded the regulator cutout contacts together. this would explain why the cables spark when you connect them even though everything is turned off. You had a 6V pos ground generator having a head on collision with a neg ground 6V battery which would cause a 12V dead short. You may be able to save the regulator if you break the contacts apart and dress them with a point file.
You may also need to polorize the generator.
