About 20 yrs ago I was working with a "journeyman" mechanic, not a bad one, just more experienced. We rebuilt a d3 cat and had the engine in and making final adjustments, etc. Everytime we went to lunch he would put a wad of that blue paper towel on a roll in the air inlet to keep the dirt out until we made the final air cleaner connections. You guessed it. We fired it up to check it out and let it warm up. After a minute or so it started missing and then the pretty glowing embers poured out. A minute or so later no harm no foul. Good thing no one saw us. ;)
