I would say you had in the wrong category or had some extras(featured item, etc.). As a small business ebay and and paypal do take quite a cut, but its still cheaper than having a real store and paying for a ton of adverstising. Getting set up with Credit cards is no cheaper than paypal really.
It would be harder to just sell a few things from the garage the way they have got things now. It seems like collector items still sell pretty good though, so it may be worth the extra hassle.
