I think they may be federally protected. They kill one around here once in a while (Central Texas). They clamed one killed a few years ago weighed almost 200 lbs. I have seen several pictures taken with a game camera. I have tracks of every kind around my pond, especially now that we are in a drought. I have seen there tracks occasionally.
