Barley straw is an excellent non-chemical, non-mechanical solution to control algae. We use aeration ( a Gast rotary vane compressor) in our our production ponds to bring up the dissolved oxygen levels, de-stratify water and to remove nitrogen. Weed and algae control in our reserve ponds is accomplished by a minimum water depth of 24 inches at the pond bank. Also discourages thieving herons, cranes, etc. as they don't like to get their feathers wet.
