Case 541 electrical problem

I have been doing final electrical restoration on a 541 (530) gas Case. I have rebuilt the starter and that works fine. My tractor (don't know the year) has a dash that includes only lights for oil and gen, a tach (mechanical-works) and guages for temp and gas level. I know the generator is not charging...but noticed that the new battery was connected with a negative ground by the previous owner. The manual I have shows a positive ground. If this Model WAS to be positive ground, I would assume that the fuel and temp guages were rewired(wired reversed) to read in a correct direction? My questions are: 1) would the starter run in the correct direction regardless of battery polarity (would have a field that reverses...not a perm. magnet field) 2) could the generator be properly polarized opposite the original polarization and still work properly? 3)would this in any way affect the regulator (looks like it might need replacement anyway) 4)If all the above would not affect normal charging, then would there be any problem with my leaving the tractor this way to prevent accidents when being jumped from another neg. ground vehicle? I have an electrical degree, but have forgotten most of the technology related to the older systems.

The need for fabricating becomes obvious when you go to buy any of these
