The way your battery is grounded to the vehicle has nothing to do with it.
If you hook your jumper cables up pos-neg and pos-neg you will be doubling your voltage and creating a dead short all at the same time. So you will have 24 volts going thru your jumper cables with a very hi amount of unknown amperage and it will melt something. Either the insulation off your jumper cables or melt the terminals on the battery if they don't blow up first.
One easy way to remember this is when you put batteries in a flash light they are postitioned positive to negative and it doubles the voltage. Each D-cell battery is 1.5 volts.
