I did legal work (collections, dealing with irate customers, etc.) for a used car dealer in Seattle about 20 years ago. My assistant ended up doing most of the interaction with the owner (and a lot of the work). She was a single mom, 2 kids, just a good, hardworking person. Car dealer took a liking to her, and when he found out her old car had died, he just gave her one. Told her if it had problems, call his lot, they'd either fix it, or just give her a different one. They were generally barges from the mid '70's that nobody wanted in the late '80's. He said giving them away was as good as incurring the expense of taking them to the auto auction and getting a pittance- plus, it kept her motivated (I do know that she always made sure his cases got worked on promptly).
I left the firm in '89 and don't know how long the arrangement went on. Don't think there was any ulterior motive- she was not real attractive, and he was a gold chain, trophy wife type, but a good guy.
