How much is excessive is hard to define, but if there is enough vibration to alarm you, then it's probably too much. Even in the early '40's engines didn't vibrate. Something is amiss, there are many possibilities, a missing fan blade, a loose flywheel, bad main bearings. Get expert help if need be, something loose or out of balance could be doing a lot of damage in a short while. Good luck.
