when i was in sasketchewan, about eighty to one hundred miles south east of prince albert during the harvest the farmers there were saying the same thing. this was in early mid-september and the flocks were huge. one farmer said he couldn't get one field of oats done before the snow the previous fall so the oats layed in the swath all winter, which is not all that uncommon, and by the time he could harvest them in the spring the geese had ruined the crop. they stood on the swaths and converted the oats they ate into fertilizer that was deposited back onto the swath. he collected crop insurance on a total loss. i don't suppose quaker oats wanted those oats for oatmeal!jim
