First question is whether you are trying to shift between gears while in motion. If so, your transmission wasn't sychronized to make that a smooth operation. In normal operation, you'll come to a stop, step on your clutch pedal for long enough to let the input shaft spin to a stop, then select your gear and engage the clutch. One leg is enough, but if you have three arms, you can reliably shift silently thorugh the gears.
Neutral you can generally slap the shifter from side to side. If your shifter mechanism is worn, it can wobble so that it doesn't move that freely, but that's the gist of it.
