The pipe thread is 1" NPT they are made of plastic and work great I first found out about them at a hog opperation then now i use one in a dairy barn when the cows are in over night and on the water tank outside over night also they work alot better than cleaning up a bunch of water I usualy put them in parallel with a shut off valve so you can run water regularly when someone is around and i put a shut off valve befor it so i can shut off water if i need to change it out
